A Word About Roses...

A rose is a rose is a rose....or is it?

Yes a rose is a rose but not all roses are created, or should we say 'grown' equal. Roses are the most popular flower sold in the world! Most roses sold here in the United States are grown in Columbia and Equador and are sprayed with large amounts of pesticides, fungicides, and chemical fertilizers. They then travel thousands of miles to get to us here in Portland, the 'Rose' City and one of the greenest cities in the country. Doesn't make much sense, right? Especially since we have a wonderful local rose grower right in our own backyard, Peterkort Roses of Hillsboro.

Peterkort is a 60 year old family owned business and grows a wide range of beautiful roses, lilies and orchids. They are committed to growing the greenest roses and flowers possible and employ many green practices in their business. Read more about their green practices at www.peterkortroses.com

If you buy or receive our locally grown roses, you may notice that the flower heads are not as large as what we are used to. Sure the South American roses are larger but what our home grown beauties lack in size, they make up for it in fragrance, longevity and sutainability. FYI -  By the time the imported roses get to us, they have been out of water for a week to 10 days. Peterkort's roses are cut and processed the day before we buy them and are never out of water.

For those of you who like a larger rose, on occasion we do carry California grown roses (semi-local) as well as EcoRoses, certified sustainably grown roses from Equador. Please call ahead with your preferences so we can make sure we can get them in time.
